Patrick Henry

Patrick Henry was born in Hanover County in 1736 and failed at several early business ventures. He taught himself law and took his exam before Peyton Randolph, then Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court in Williamsburg. Justice Randolph was reported to have been amazed at his command of the law.

Henry practiced law in Louisa as early as 1760. He moved to Louisa in 1765 and represented Louisa in the House of Burgesses. He was a brilliant man, and a gifted speaker who commanded the attention of his colleagues.
