Description

This is a stone road marker placed by General John Hartwell Cocke, the Fluvanna County Overseer of Roads, in 1828. This specific marker directed people from the Fluvanna County seat at Palmyra to the James River at New Canton. There were multiple markers put in place around the county by General John Hartwell Cocke, and all were native stone quarried by General Cocke’s own workers. On the reverse side of the marker reads IHC OR 1828, meaning John Hartwell Cocke, Overseer of Roads, created in 1828.
