Title

Arminius Mines

Subject

mining

Description

This image is of the daily operations of the Arminius mines, one of the largest mines in the area. A skip is seen in many of the images of the mines. It was used to transfer three to four tons of ore which are then dumped into big crushers before being sent to jigs to wash the ore. Working with the jigs was a constant struggle for the Arminius Mines. They were unable to effectively wash the tailings out of the ore. Slate and silica would contaminate the ore, making it impossible to sell to manufacturers. The miners made numerous attempts to get the tailings out; however, both jig and hand washing were ineffective.
